Hormone Balance - Infertility, Menopause, Thyroid
Hormones - little chemicals that can help us enjoy life to it's fullest, or have us frustrated and suffering seemingly at the drop of a hat. So much of our health depends on hormone balance, from managing weight and energy levels, to getting pregnant or transitioning smoothly into menopause. Men can also suffer from hormonal imbalances, which often present with a change in mood, weight gain or low energy levels. Whichever your situation I am a great person to talk to regarding a full assessment of your hormones, what testing would be appropriate (if any) going forward, and what you can do to help restore balance.
Herbal medicine can improve the body's hormone balance by regulating cycles, decreasing hot flashes, or supporting thyroid function. I always ensure that any herbal therapy I recommend will not interact with medications a patient is taking, and are in the right form and concentration to provide benefit. Not one size fits all when it comes to hormone balance, so deciding what each patient needs after taking a complete case history is an important part of recommendations.
Nutrition and Supplements
Nutritional counselling and certain supplements can help support the body during times of hormone imbalance. Various nutrients are important to optimize function and production of thyroid hormone, can improve chances of fertility, and can help balance hormone levels in conditions like PCOS. As a naturopathic doctor, I always review current supplements with patients to make sure they are taking the dose and form that is best for their health - not all supplements are created equally!
Acupuncture is a tool that can be used to treat many conditions from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Evidence suggests that treatments can help improve chances of fertility even when used in combination with IVF, and in my clinical experience it can also help regulate cycles. Acupuncture has also been shown to help decrease the intensity and severity of hot flashes during menopause. Session involve the shallow insertion of small sterile needles into certain points to bring the body back into balance. Treatment is largely free of discomfort and the patient is left to relax for about 15 minutes. Don't be afraid to contact me if you would like more information on this treatment or others!
